چکیده

The Bi(111) surface was studied by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) in order to verify the existence of a recently proposed surface charge density wave (CDW) [Ch. R. Ast and H. Höchst Phys. Rev. Lett. 90, 016403 (2003)]. The STM and TEM results to not support a CDW scenario at low temperatures. Furthermore, the quasiparticle interference pattern observed in STM confirms the spin-orbit split character of the surface states which prevents the formation of a CDW, even in the case of good nesting. The dispersion of the electronic states observed with ARPES agrees well with earlier findings. In particular, the Fermi contour of the electron pocket at the centre of the surface Brillouin zone is found to have a hexagonal shape. However, no gap opening or other signatures of a CDW phase transition can be found in the temperature-dependent data. PACS numbers: 71.45.Lr, 73.20.-r,79.60.-i,73.25.+i

Indication of charge-density-wave formation in Bi(111).

Photoemission spectroscopy of Bi(111) reveals a small hexagonal two-dimensional Fermi surface (FS) associated with an electron band centered in the surface Brillouin zone. Along the hexagon the Fermi momentum k(F) ranges from 0.053 to 0.061 A(-1). Temperature dependent valence band spectra show an anisotropic energy gap Delta near the Fermi level. We find a transition temperature of about 75 K....

Strong spin-orbit splitting on bi surfaces.

Using first-principles calculations and angle-resolved photoemission, we show that the spin-orbit interaction leads to a strong splitting of the surface-state bands on low-index surfaces of Bi. The dispersion of the states and the corresponding Fermi surfaces are profoundly modified in the whole surface Brillouin zone. We discuss the implications of these findings with respect to a proposed sur...

Atomistic picture of charge density wave formation at surfaces.

We used ultrafast electron diffraction and density-functional theory calculations to gain insight into the charge density wave (CDW) formation on In/Si(111). Weak excitation by a femtosecond-laser pulse results in the melting of the CDW. The immediate freezing is hindered by a barrier for the motion of atoms during the phase transition: The melted CDW constitutes a long-lived, supercooled phase...

Pair density wave in the pseudogap state of high temperature superconductors.

Recent scanning tunneling microscopy experiments of Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8+delta) have shown evidence of real-space organization of electronic states at low energies in the pseudogap state [Science 303, 1995 (2004)]]. We argue based on symmetry considerations as well as model calculations that the experimentally observed modulations are due to a density wave of d-wave Cooper pairs without global ...

Origin of the energy barrier to chemical reactions of O2 on Al(111): evidence for charge transfer, not spin selection.

Dissociative adsorption of molecular oxygen on the Al(111) surface exhibits mechanistic complexity that remains surprisingly poorly understood in terms of the underlying physics. Experiments clearly indicate substantial energy barriers and a mysteriously large number of adsorbed single oxygen atoms instead of pairs. Conventional first principles quantum mechanics (density functional theory) pre...
